Polka Dot Swimsuit

How to Change a Swimsuit to a Tankini Top

This swimsuit didn't fit my daughter in length, but she wanted it to be cut so that she could wear it as a tankini top with her black bottoms.  This is very easy to do.  Notice I am measuring below where the side ties are.  We want to keep them.

Make your mark and cut.

Unpick the old stitching and pin under a single fold.

Use a double needle for the topstitching.  This will give a nice stretch knit stitch, with double straight stitching on the face side, and a stretch zigzag stitch on the back side.  You will use two spools of thread, or wind an extra bobbin.  Stitch both the front and the back, backstitching at the casing sides.  I lengthen my stitch length to 3 - 3.5.

What a cute new tankini top, ready to be used at the beach!
